Hello again (second try on this question), What might have happened here. I opened the address book after writing an email, and all I saw there were icons (all looking the same) but each one standing for a name I had listed. The only way I was able to see who belonged to each icon was to right-click it and see properties.
It did not repair itself when importing the list from a backup. What's most unusual is that there is absolutely no text there other than those icons on the left side ...
