Seems adding the CSS coding to the page enabled this friend to access it with no
trouble. I think we also have to remember that just because two events happen (what's
the word, "consecutively?), does not alway indicate cause and effect. He couldn't open
the page, I added css coding, he opened the page. It *sounds* like css did it but there
could always be another factor that is working in the background that solved the
problem
... how software gets along with each other on a computer can be, like people getting
along (or not), when married to each other, very mysterious.

Sounds easier than it really is, especially when I don't know anything about FTP ...

me
in taking care of the site (how to make changes on all the pages without accessing each
page individually). The lessons I learned might be of interest to some others in the
group so I'll share my thoughts on this.
I started the first page knowing nothing about html so that whatever worked became the
way to go, and I fell into many bad habits. Note that all my pages are very simple in
form, with three basic parts: Let's think of a simple html page as having three parts
(like in the opening lines in Ceasar's Commentaries, "Gallia est omnis divisa in tres
partes").
The top part that has all the instructions for the browser ... meta tags to more easily
connect to search engines, background color or image directions, font infomation, the
title that you see in the browser's top and taskbar button, the page format, and maybe
a
few other optional items. If I were starting all over again, I'd have all that first
part as identical as possible so that "Find and Replace" on all the pages in my
"master"
word processor document in one stroke would be possible. Of course, then I'd have to
access each editor page in GeoCities. In my case, I made changes as I learned more
about
html so that "Find and Replace" is not that easy to do (maybe impossible).
The second part, of course, is content ... and that will be different on all pages, and
making wholesale changes never necessary. And the third part, usually the closing tags
on the bottom of the page, can easily be the same on all the pages. Keep in mind I'm
talking about simple pages, and as I learned more about html, I added what I learned to
new pages (as I went along). So we are talking about that top section, where in my
case,
making changes across the board, is easier said than done.
I thought I had the idea some time ago, advised by Hugh (Hi Hugh), but then realizing
that my pages are set up in the top section in different ways, again, Find/Replace
becomes (I think) unfeasable. And then I would have to ask how I would make any ohne
change on all of the pages in the GeoCities "File Manager" without visiting each and
every GeoCities editor where the changes eventually have to be placed. What I really
need is someone to come to to Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and show me the way ... any
takers? What's the difference, Hugh says I am only messing around and having fun; and
he's right. So I think I'll now watch Seinfeld now; very typical upper west side
Manhattan humor .... Harold.
Btw, I hope you are all sending in a little something to help Marlene out; it must cost
something to run this newsletter. I mailed mine this afternoon.
