As far as I know, EMM386 manages EXPANDED memory, which W98 just ignores. Extended memory just does not exist for DOS. I have worked with W98SE and 768MB ram and everything was normal, I used to tweak the memory management a little bit with cacheman. I also tried to use 1GB but that motherboard would not recognize both (cheap) ram sticks together. then I changed the motherboard and I am using 1GB with XP pro with no problems. Again, I worked with W98SE - 768MB for more than one year and then I read I could not do that :o)) but I did not mind. Got rid of '98 when it got too diffcult to configure a home network...
good luck Jorge

Jorge,
That will not work, as it seems, a number of other things that are supposed to work do not, including all the stuff from the MS support area.
The problem I am running into is that my current system has 512 Megs of ram - BUT what I am trying to do is add another 512 Megs of ram for use by my WinXP operations.
The problem comes with Win98, which I need for various operations as well - IF you add the additional 512 Megs of ram, for a total of 1 Gig, Win98 will not operate or properly.
Unfortunately, trying all the tricks shown on MS's web site, for limiting things in the system.ini file, with entries in [386Emm] and [vcache], resulted in total disaster, including one situation that required my reinstalling the whole OS from scratch.
This also included doing as you sugguested - running msconfig and under advanced, setting the max memory that Win98 was to use. It does not work when the system has more than 512 Megs of ram it would seem from what I found.
Since the sugguestions directly involving Win98 do not seem to work, the reason for my asking if anyone has found a way by use of a memory manager, such as EMM386, or similiar, to limit the amount of memory at the DOS level that the system will actually be seeing for DOS and Win98.
And if that is possible, then what parm(s)f and values would be used to exlude all ram above 512 Megs.
