And, here is yet something else I just received!

Well, I can see Hugh's post was somewhat more "critical" and "colorful" at
bashing me that what Harold quoted, and seems it's much more personal that a
"disagreement"! I found it in the archives (now 2nd from the bottom).

For starters Hugh, I **DO NOT MAKE** "patently false and alarming
statements", I am rather offended by your comment, and frankly
SHOCKED you would make it and have the audacity to call me a liar.

To use an analogy if you will.......If MANY places tell you that a certain
pharmaceutical has killed more than the margin of error amount for those
whom have used it, yet a few say it's safe, are you going to still continue
to take the pharmaceutical, is that wise thing?? I think not.

You obviously did not do the search I suggested, so I'll do it again, for
you.

(Note portions of the outline on that page that mention how to deal with
"issues" and "problems").

>From a PCworld article that the URL is no longer valid:
"The service pack will be downloaded automatically into many PCs
through Microsoft's Windows Update service and could create problems,
including breaking current applications, disrupting networking set-ups, and
prompting non-technical users to make PC configuration decisions that may be
beyond their grasp. Might be a good time to turn OFF that auto update
feature."

....and 192,000 more, but I think I've made my point. But to add, here are
some quotes from ONE message board only:

"XP SP2 Issues After installing the service pack I was unable to the Internet
because the Firewall settings would not let me use the hardcoded Proxy server
address. After reconfiguring the firewall settings I was able to access the
internet. The next problem I experienced was that I was no longer able to
access any of the Critical Updates from the Microsoft website (this was
running fine prior to the installation of the SP). After that I noticed that
the SP did not play well with Symantec AV 7.0. The ePolicy Orchestrator Agent
(which was running fine prior to the installation of the SP) stopped working.
I tried uninstalling the all of the Symantec software several times but
nothing helped. The only thing that fixed my problems was acompleted reload.
I think the SP needs a little more work."

"For ds from USA. The new firewall features aren't designed for corporate
use. They are for the average joe bloggs user out there. I'm an IT
administrator and the amount of people in the office who bring in their
computers for me to repair as they haven't deployed firewalls or antivirus
software either at all or properly. Having a better firewall in SP2 will help
but not stop a lot of internet network problems along with stopping worms and
viruses spreading so far. I'm assuming that MS can add rules to the firewall
through Windows Updates blocking ports for certain virus signatures and help
quell the scurry of the real enemy who I hold no regard for in any way. If
they feel exploiting and destroying someones computer feels good, then they
deserve to be hung and quartered. No exceptions."

"For a computer with a p4..2.6...512...128 video made system totally dogs
out....so slow...changing users you can count the minutes...this is after
patches from Black Viper and having TweakXP optimize my system and running
bootvis..very little running...issues with outlook express...Norton....but
the reduction of speed in the system was the most discouring thing....maybe
with a new install it may be better.Maybe XP is getting too big for its
britches....."

"I tried SP2 and I would not recommend it for the average user. You know, the
user that does not have an IS department backing them up, but, may be the IS
department, and every other department themselves. I feel sorry for the older
users at home, not able to find the time, or the inclination to configure a
firewall, or all of a sudden, because they installed an update they can no
longer recieve their email. or cannot download programs that were able to do
before. I say the process needs simplification if you want to further the
computer home business. It should be a simple process, much like using a
toaster. a blender, or some such appliance. This simply an appliaence. How
many people are going to willing to do what is needed? They will simple do as
the above comment suggests. Turn it off. Then what have we accomplished?
Simple is better, if you want people to actually use it. As I said, I tried
it and I will avoid using it again if I can. Yes, I have had experience in
computers, but this seemed awful to administer. Good Luck if you try it. No,
I am not a Microsoft basher or hater, but I believe they need to change this
process a little. Thanks for your time. "

So, for your information, I DO NOT, nor WILL I EVER MAKE "patently false and
alarming statements" as you put it! "Alarming", maybe, but NOT FALSE!

------From the reply to Harold's post-------------

I never saw Hugh's post, I guess something in it was blocked. I don't think
it's a "disagreement", Hugh is just unaware.

Hugh, you're just lucky. Each PC is going to have a different configuration
which sometimes will show different updates, and of course each PC is going
to be setup differently. You only THINK you need them. If you look in the
archives for all of my posts on this subject, you'll understand. In short:
just because M$ says "you have critical updates to install", does NOT mean
they are for **YOU** specifically. The majority of the updates are not
needed if one runs a firewall, and also many updates are only needed if you
have specific Services turned on. You need to always read the "Read more..."
links under each update at the update site to get the full intent and scope
of the update. Currently, there are about 16 updates shown at the update
site that I don't need because I run a firewall, and have 25+ unnecessary XP
Services disabled.

If M$ has never dumped anything on your PC without your knowing, then you
must not have Auto Updates enabled, or if so it may be configured
differently. Years ago when I used to have AU enabled, all it said was
something like "there are new updates for your PC" and "do you want to
install them", and it never told you how many, or what they were for. The 2
most recent people I know that told me new updates screwed things up, both
said they got no warning, it was all done in the background, and both had
CONSIDERABLE damages.

As for the damages I've experienced; on SEVERAL occasions specific updates
caused at least one of the following: MASSIVE slowdowns in XP, MASSIVE
slowdowns with IE, MASSIVE slowdowns in OE, no longer being able to open URL
links in separate IE windows from within OE, Java applets no longer working,
not being able to boot, and of course numerous crashes and errors. All of
which were proven by removing the update(s) and trying them again only to
have the same problems reappear.

No MS update has ever broken my PC. No MS update has ever broken the PC of
anyone I know, or know of.
MS has never "dumped" an update on my PC that I didn't need. MS has never
dumped an update on the PC of anyone I know that they didn't need.
It's too bad, and possibly counter-productive that otherwise knowledgable
people make these patently false and alarming statements.
SP2 willl doubtless cause a problem or two, but it's mostly about security,
which is good for all of us.
Scot Finnie just did a column on SP2, which you can read here:
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/60.htm
******************************************************************

There IS a "swelling of news" about it! :-) Search Google for
XP SP2 issues OR problems and there's almost 200,000 hits.
People are also noticing many of their software/programs no longer
work.

When they had auto update enabled, M$ dumps every conceivable
update on your PC, of which the majority you don't even need, and
also of which the majority will screw up your PC.
