Whew! All went well on this Gateway P4 GHz Laptop. The
download was lager than the stated 75MB on the download
site, weighing in at a very hefty 95.70MB. With cable
access that went pretty quickly. The installation seemed
painfully slow. Verifying file download seemed to take
as long as the actual download. Then files were backed
up, necessary space determined, and finally files were
installed. Entire process took just over an hour. The
only preparation I made was to disable Bootskin (a
little something for the grandkids on my otherwise very
straight-forward, no-nonsense computer). I had read at
M$ that SP2 and Bootskin seem to conflict along with
SEVERAL other programs, including Zone Alarm, which I
also have on this PC. I did not shut down Zone Alarm
during the SP2 installation. After a very slow first
reboot, Zone alarm loaded as usual. no problems noted.
Windows firewall did not load. I then went to the
Shields up test site @ GRC.com and passed all the tests
there. Then I shut down Zone Alarm, enabled the Windows
Firewall and re-tested @ GRC.com, and again passed all
the tests. I do think, though that I will stick with
Zone Alarm for now, simply because I am used to it, and
still a little unsure of the M$ firewall just yet. I've
not checked ALL my programs yet, but email, browser,
yahoo messenger all seem to work just fine. That said,
I'll still wait some time before I attempt to update the
three PC's at the office :-)

Subject: PCWorks: SP2 available on CD free of charge

Hi all,

I have been reading all the pro's and cons of SP2, and
must admit, I have not installed it on any of my systems
yet. It does seem that the majority of installations go
without problems, but with my luck (being similar to
Clint's ;->), I'm sure I'll run into at least a snag or
two. This is my last email on my new laptop before
installing it...so if you don't hear from me for
days...you'll know what happened! Actually...if it gets
hosed, I'll let y'all know from the office tomorrow. In
the meantime, Microsoft is offering the CD of SP2 at no
cost...even free shipping here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2
/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Wish me luck!
Marlene
