Please use a more appropriate subject line that just "Help". I've changed it.
Note that your XP Pro restore point will be lost in a few days, so you can't rely on it. Norton causes many problems, you're the 3rd person recently that mentioned Norton messed up their Recycle bin. I'd for starters run the "Files and settings transfer wizard" and just save settings, *maybe* that will protect the Desktop. I'd also run "Backup" since that will surely save the Desktop along with everything else. There's an option in "Backup" to only save certain things so maybe that will be better. Note with it though that if you run it to restore, it will overwrite whatever changed since the backup. There's a lot of freeware programs on the net for saving/restoring Desktop settings so you may want to look into one of them. It still could be a malware problem. You need to run ALL of the anti-malware programs and run the online scanners, you can't just rely on one or two since they all will miss things. That .xpl file extension could be proprietary. I believe the only XP file type that uses .xpl is a Windows Script file or music file (I doubt it's music since it mentions icons). The others are special files for specific programs (like "X Set" or "Xteq"). So, I wouldn't delete them. Where is their location and what do the properties say when you right click the files? -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Briggs" Many Thanks to all who replied. Yes I was able to retrieve all 28 programs and their icons from the trash bin. They had been protected by Norton AV. That was a break. I then ran all my security programs and found but one cookie, nothing else. Something surely deleted all my security programs but I got lucky. Thanks So Much. I will now created a new Restore point and save my desktop layout. Thanks Once More, Rocky de Dragon from Florida PS Please Note Roger: The only files I found were: XQ Shelliconcache clear.XPL XQ Shelliconcache count.XPL is it safe to delete both of them? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> You might try deleting a file in the Windows Directory called Shelliconcache. The system will restore the file upon bootup.
