        Actually, the only file that shows up as hidden with
my file utility is the desktop.ini file. Some of the files and 
folders under and including Temporary Internet Files
will not show from the dir DOS prompt.  You have to
use   dir /a    .  This must have to do with how windows
sets them up because they are not hidden, system or
read only.

The index.dat file should be generated
when the computer is booted to windows. The four
sub-folders with the strange 8 letter names under the
content.IE5 folder might also be required for the 
index.dat file to be generated. These are
generated when you visit web sites.  Make sure
you have these folders after a visit to internet sites.

If you have done all of the above and still do not find
the index.dat file from the DOS prompt, then your
system is not acting normally. (Which is what you have
been saying from the beginning). A program might be
operating that prevents storage of data from visits to
internet sites.
