Hello again (using Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6), Original problem ... I now have Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6 running, and everything on the computer is working fine. The ONLY problem is that when sending a txt document to myself in OE, although the icon shows up upon clicking the paper clip, the label is greyed out (making the txt file not accessible). I see this in both the Sent folder and the Inbox folder.
I haven't noticed any change in file types; Folder Options shows that Text Document (Extension txt dic exe, whatever that means), Content Type (MIME) text/plain (whatever all that means), is opening with Notepad. The only change I made is that I'm using Notepad+ (I doubt if anyone still uses the original Windows Notepad), and that should not be causing the problem ... been using it for years. Both Notepad+ and the original Notepad are working fine, but neither one opens in OE. Sounds like there is some configuration in OE that is needed. Could it be something in the Registry (that's my playground where I like to hang out). Any suggestions? From: CLINT "Support-OrpheusComputing.com" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Well that could be causing the problem. Have ALL txt files open again with the regular Notepad (totally disassociate EVERYTHING with Notepad+), THEN try to open txt files in OE and see what happens. You may have to even uninstall Notepad+, but even that is not going to remove the registry of ALL of it. You may have to manually search the registry for **every single entry** of txt and associate it with Notepad. There may even be registry entries in the OE areas regarding attachments and the handling thereof, and they may not appear under any of the txt entries. These tags may have to be changed. Like I said, going into Folder Options and File Types and just "looking" may not be enough. Those things you mentioned for txt files under File Types may not be the same as on other PC's and that may be the cause. I can't check these on mine since I use Metapad in place of Notepad, but for many file types and their handling there are things like "DDE", and specific suffixes on the end of the path to the executable that when modified can change the behavior of everything they do. RESPONSE: I did what you suggested; deleted all references to Notepad+ from in Windows (where the notepads reside), and also from the Registry. An aside: Notepad+ I recommend highly (it has all the Notepad features plus some), easy to install, and allows for the keeping of the original notepad if desired ... and therefore just as easy to remove. And after doing this, again, the original notepad is not accessible in my Outlook Express. I can open MSWord, and any graphics, but any notepad is out. Out of curiosity, I sent email from my Hotmail to this RCN server and Notepad files would not open (MSWord *would* open). The same Notepad file sent from Hotmail to Hotmail opens fine (as an attachment). Something is going on between my OE and my Notepad (or Notepad+); like a bad marriage we need a good attorney ... if there is such an animal. Any recommendations? ...
