You can go on to USE your computer, but you should not install anything ELSE until you restart. You should even restart after installing something that doesn't even prompt for a restart, it's a good habit to get into.
Of what?? An indication that your bad HD, *IS* bad! Defrag not withstanding since that's going to be quicker. But if it's for other type of scans and it's still MUCH quicker, that's another warning sign the OS drive is going bad. HD's without an OS on them aren't going to get fragmented very often. That stands to reason. You should not be defrag'ing if it's only taking a few seconds. Defrag'ing has been known to cause wear on a HD and it's not good to do it unless it needs it. That's why there is "Analyze" on XP's defrag and on Diskeeper. I don't think ME has that, so you should just wait longer and longer until it takes maybe 10 minutes to defrag, then wait that length of time from then on between defrag'ing the drive. -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> In a message dated 9/6/2004 3:42:50 AM Central Daylight Time, orpheuscomputing.com writes: > ?? Then why does it give me the option to restart later? The fact that the 250gb is scanning that much faster that the smaller one is ANOTHER warning sign. Of what? It's always been incredibly fast. For the first few months after I had it it took all of about 5 seconds to go through the complete defrag on the 250, but I didn't have a lot saved on it at that time. Maybe a few gig. Now that it's half full it takes a few minutes, at most, to defrag. > > You mention errors, but you never say what they are. They came and went so fast I didn't have time to take notes, and, besides, it didn't matter to me since my next step was to write zeroes again. No, sorry, they haven't shown up after the reformat because I've not been able to run anti-spy since then. They showed up after the week long anti-spy run, right before I decided to reformat. Almost everything is back to normal so far. I still have three or four apps to install, but I'm not able to get sound on either the the desktop itself or the DVD player app. None of my system sounds are on board for some reason. I can play cd's in Winamp and one or two other devices, but I can't play sound on the DVD player. The pictures come out fine, but I have no sound. Dale Addendum: I finally got the sound working an hour ago. I still can't get to safe mode or run Scandisk, but I got AVG's anti-spy last night and ran that twice, it says I have none. I ran defrag just after that and, even though I only have just under 3 gig used on the C drive, it still took an hour to run, mostly because it would go through about 2 lines, then restart, 2 more lines and restart again, etc., the whole way through. Also, I got my first error message last night, one day after I got everything working again! It was the Windows blue screen of death and the error read: ERROR: OE: 0028: C0030D04. I kept hitting the space bar and nothing happened; I kept hitting Ctrl; Alt; Del and nothing happened, so I shut it down by pushing the power button. I'm going to get a new hard drive later this week. I don't need anymore excrement from this one. Dale ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
