With XP pro, then run the network wizard on the laptop to establish the full capablity for networking to the internent. Treat the DSL as a network and your two computers as nodes on that network. Be sure to have the same work group for both.

Have you run the setup for the router on the laptop.  It may be that the

setup cannot find the port of the router. BTW, you didn't say which OS you are using. I know that setups with Win 98 are more difficult for wireless than Win XP.
