Yeah, I knew where the number was since I saw it in the registry when I searched for it.
It's not a strange request when you install '98 using an existing CD with an old Product ID that's been used and scanned by the Update site, and you then need to use the CD on another PC. :-) Thanks for the info Wally. -Clint Merry Christmas to all & God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ) http://ComputersCustomBuilt.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Clint: That sure is a strange request. Following is some information for you to ponder. The product ID appears only once in the registry for both win98SE and win95 -B . I think it can be changed without any harm in that one place. As always, save a copy of the registry as a backup before changing anything. The number can be read by going to My Computer\Control Panel\System in both win 98SE and win95. It can be changed in the registry by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion- ProductID Win95 has no ProductKey but the ProductKey for Win98SE can be found next to the ProductID. The ProductID is required to complete the installation of win95. If you are trying to install win95 from a different installation disc over a previous installation of win95, the Product ID for the new disc will not work. You have to enter the ProductID for the old installation already on the computer. The ProductKey is required to complete the win98SE installation. I do not know if it serves any other purpose.
