Could it possibly have been the line used to go from the
puter to the phone jack? A few years ago, when I first
started getting on line here at home, I had LOTS of
trouble doing so, and this puter was fresh out of the
box at that point! I also had trouble staying ON line.
About two years later, after all that time that I was
thinking it was something wrong with the puter, or that
someone kept picking up a phone extension and kicking me
off line that way, I figured out that it was the wire
itself. It was broken inside the casing, but only just,
so it WOULD work, for a little while, but then it would
either get jostled and break the connection, or the two
ends would just barely be touching to begin with and the
ends would just completely lose contact and I'd get
booted again.
Other than that, my biggest problem was the "dance"
I had to do every time I wanted to get on line. For the
first two years that I had this beast, in order to get
on line, I had to have the wire connected to the wrong
jack in the modem, go through the dial up, at least
until it started to dial, then, switch the jack holes in
the modem while it was dialing, cancel the dial up and
start it all over again. THEN, and ONLY then, would I
get on line. Sometimes I had to do this switching move
two to five times before I got on line, but it usually
worked after the first switching. And, if I got booted,
I had to do it all over again in order to get back on.
I had a few computer geeks over here and none of them
could figure out why I had to do that to get on line.
About a year ago, probably around the time I got another
new hard drive, or when I had to write zeros and start
over again, I was finally able to get on line without
the dance. I still don't know why, but my guess would
be because something hadn't been installed right the
first time I installed all of the programs. Is it
possible that the puter you're having trouble with has
something installed badly. Might you try to reinstall
the peoplepc stuff and the internet stuff?

                            Dale
