Thru the help from others it turned out to be my Sygate Personal
Firewall that was keeping my from solving these problems. I just need to
find what I have to change in Sygate to fix the condition.

I am having another problem with a script error when I am in FP2003 and
go to the help files. When I select something that requires IE it comes
up with a script error. In troubleshooting this I thought I might try to
check with MS for any updates that might be needed. I go to start then
control panel then Microsoft update and a window says thanks for
checking but you must be running a windows system or something like
that. Now what is even stranger is that I have a laptop acting the same
way! Including the FP2003 problem.
I am using XP on both systems, FF is my default browser, Thunderbird is
my default email. I have tried to change the defaults and that did not
improve anything. I checked IE in the options advance tab and that
seemed ok. I also did check the MS site and typed in the error I get and
it said to change the Display tab to 256 colors instead of 16 bit. Well
I do not have that option. I am set to 32 bit and my only other option
is 16.
I am going to uninstall FP2003 and reinstall it as my next step.
Thanks for any help
