Hi, if dos mode means all sorts of squares, squiggles, circles, etc., then I
have had a similar problem recently. Not only did my printer print in that
peculiar language but also everything that originally came on my hard drive
was in the same odd language. I didn't know what any of my desktop icons were
as I couldn't figure out the strange language. I did figure out which one was
for my email and was able to write and receive email. Many people on the net
gave me suggestions about what to do, but nothing seemed to work. I restored
it back to two different restore dates and that didn't work. I called my
cable company and we redid all cable "stuff" with no good results. After a
week, I decided to erase everything that had originally come on my computer
and then replace it. I have an hp pavilion 7975 so I had no cd's to help me..
(Incidentally, there is a class-action suit against Hewlett Packard right now
for advertising that our computers had 80 gigs and then they used 10 of these
gigs to put the erase and restore info on. Two people have claimed it is false
advertising. I'll let you all know how the suit comes out! HP says that the
instructions on the hard disk are better that the ones on the cd's.This was
the second time that I had used them, and they really worked great for me.)

Erasing and restoring all that originally came on my computer solved my
problem. It did not erase any files that I had put on my computer during the
past two years. Actually, my computer had become very sluggish even though I
have cable. Now downloading something is almost instantaneous just as it was
when I first got cable.

Before this problem, the only thing that I had recently downloaded was a new
program that cut spam out of my emails. When my computer returned to normal, I
immediately deleter that program, just in case it had anything to do with my
computer suddenly forgetting that it was supposed to be in English. I can't
remember the name of it, but I would recignize it if I saw it.
(At almost 80. my memory isn't what it once was!!! Let me know if you
downloaded a mail program or it you find out what caused your problem. Ann
