It may not the files but the instructions for running search that are messed

And Jeff says:

Response (Jeff, I could have responded offline but maybe others might be
interested):

And I thought I was the only one this ever happened to. First I'd like to
know if these "search assistant" files can be interchanged from one Windows
XP to another. If they can, what are the names of these files? And if they
can, then I can have someone send me copies from his/her computer. I did
google ("search assistant" +download) without the parentheses, and all I see

are "search assistants" for searching within text documents; which is not
exactly what we're talking about.

And the Compaq Recovery (XP) CD (Compaq allows an owner to cut one CD and
that's it) which I have, does not include, in the "Application Recovery"
section, any mention of the system's Search applet. Btw, in this Compaq, one

doesn't necessarily need the CD because it is all included in the
preinstalled programs (but I cut one anyway, just in case).

When you get everything on the computer to work just the way you want it,
and then this happens, it can take your heart out. Of course, I'm laughing
at the same time because with all the housecleaning I do with files and
programs, I must have done one thing wrong. I laugh because it's all due to
my own stupidity. So other than why I'm always deleting files and some
programs that I think are unecesary or that I don't need, are there any
questions or suggestions? ... Harold
