Harold, that reminds me if it's made to use on Win95, you can try changing the compatibility mode. Right click the program's main .exe file (the file that launches the app) and go to "Properties", then open the "Compatibility" tab, then check the box under "Compatibility mode" and change the drop-down to Win2k, or NT, or '95. I've had some old programs work fine on XP after doing that. --- Clint
Clint, the problem with Notepad+'s compatibility mode is that there is no line for Windows XP ... it only lists Win 95, 98, ME, NT, and 2000. <snip> --- Harold
There is no line for XP on ANY program installed on XP! XP only has this, so that's why you won't find it in the drop-down selections. Why would you need to run XP, in an XP compatibility mode? You don't need to do all that. Just right click any text/.txt file and "Open with...", then choose what you want under "Choose program" and check the box to always use that program to open those types of files. --- Clint
Eureka, the problem is fixed. I gave the "Open with" another chance and this time it worked. What was happening before was that (for some reason I'll never know), the check box, "Always use the selected program..." was grayed out. Now, for some unexplained reason, I'm able to check it. I brought the Notepad+ shortcut into the Start menu, gave it's "shortcut key" box in Properties the big N, and all is working fine. Sometimes I think this computer has a life of its own, and if this were Twilight Zone, I'd be having a relationship with it.
The five steps I mentioned earlier (copy and overwriting etc.) can be used in Windows98 if you want to always have the option of using both Notepad+ and the original Notepad at any time. Regarding that compatibility mode, maybe I'm reading it wrong. Although the step is unnecessary now, I read (first paragraph above) that I should go to the exe file of Notepad+ (which I put in Program Files), right click, Properties, Compatibility tab, and make it compatible for this XP I have.
Now you say (third paragraph above) that there is no line for XP. So why would I be going to the Compatibility tab if I can't make Notepad+ compatible with XP? I'm sure I'm reading it wrong, and it's a moot point now because "open with" made it work. So I thank Clint for this round of private tutoring, for reminding me of Metapad and calling "compatibility mode" to my attention.
