Problem solved; I went to "System Restore" and brought the computer back to an earlier restore point. I'd still like to know more about that "User Accounts" link in Control Panel. So far it seems that "Compaq_Owner" is the only name that works. Maybe I'll leave well enough alone and just use my real name to sign checks --- Harold

Using Windows XP, a few days ago, I made some changes in my "user name" changing it from Compaq_Owner" to "Harold" (because I'm the owner, why not, that's my name) and because of the following problem, I changed it back to "Compaq_Owner" ... still not all is fixed.

Now on "Restart" I get message on the splash or logo screen (whatever it's called), "Windows is starting up..." and it hangs there. Therefore I have to give it a cold reboot.

After that full rebooting (complete shut-down), I get this logon message ... "The system could not log on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again..."

I then click OK, then the "Compaq_Owner" button appears on the right of the screen. I click it and finally the desktop appears. As I said, I did change my "user name" to "Harold" (which appears as "Harold" behind that "logon message") and then disappears after I click OK on the "logon message".

I think I have to make some changes in Control Panel "User Accounts". My real question is: What changes should I make so that I have the easiest logon. I'm the only one who uses this computer and I don't want any passwords to boot up. I would also like that "logon message" to not show up; I know it didn't until I made that "user name" change. I'd be happy to change the logon to the default setting (if there is one). --- Harold
