With the help of a friend, I want to build a new computer.

I do a lot of OCR, audio recording/restoration - noise/hiss reduction,
and conversion of WAV to MP3.
I also use software-based speech synthesizers as output for my
screenreading program.

Naturally, I would like to multitask as much of the above as possible,
plus be able to do Web and E-mail without having dropouts while I'm
recording or have my speech synthesizer stuttering or pausing.

I'm *thinking that a dual-core CPU would not be extravagant for these
requirements/desires, but I understand there are several models and I
don't know how to evaluate which have features to recommend or exclude
them from my consideration.

Is there a "CPU's for dummies" writeup anywhere that could simplify my
decision-making?

TIA
