check for NULL-functionpointers into jack-framework on all platforms
sometimes, jack is also weakly linked on linux (and protecting the
check with __APPLE__ leads to crashes in such situations)
in any case, we want to be sure that jack_client_open is non-NULL, in *all*
cases...

Try a system-chosen random gui-port before giving up.
if we have 20 instances of Pd running (or some other programs blocking
ports 5400-5420), this will fall back to get some system assigned port.

as they lead to infinite loops...
we also do an early exit if hop-size is "0", as signmund_ilog(0) returns
"-1", causing undefined behaviour when used in bitshifting.
