The reason is that with the debug version, there's an assertion whether the pointer is non-null which gets trapped by the debugger. In the release version there's no such check which means that the memory deallocation silently does bad things, causing crashes after a while almost certainly.
Should I post this bug/solution on the flext mailing list?
