you shall decide to either use makefile.mingw or the new autotools system.
you shall never mix the two.
especially, you shall not run ./autogen.sh and then try to compile using
makefile.mingw

thus: remove all traces from the autotools build system (namely any
generated files, like GNUmakefile)
