i think CMake is an abomination.
more than autotools and m4? ;-)
I'm curious what you dislike so much about (modern) CMake... I find it
really easy to setup new projects. Also, documentation is quite decent.

That danger is very real :-) I would definitely prefer CMake over
autotools.
