Yes.
If you want to keep the important bits in your home folder and still
have pd in your path, you can always symlink, i.e.   ln -s
/home/chuckk/pd-0.40.0-2/ /usr/local/bin/.  But you still need root
access.

I don't know if that's considered good practice though.

Nah, I don't want that stuff in my home folder, I like to keep that
clear.  It makes sense, now that I think about it: without installing
as root, I couldn't edit the /usr folder at all.  Duh.
