Checklist: Other audio apps work fine?
Speakers, cables, amplifier, soundcard, mixer (in that order)? Is one of the audio driver boxes (ALSA, JACK, OSS, ASIO etc) on the media menu checked? Configure your audio drivers, start Jack etc Can you get a visual indication of an audio signal (eg meterbridge) ?
