You might be interested in pdsend and pdreceive, the command line
tools included with pd.

The semicolon makes all the difference.
I also found that it works to say
-send ";bajesus $VAR" inside a bash script, if you're into that
kind of thing.
I have no idea where the message goes if you don't use a semicolon.
