because OSS and ALSA are designed for exclusive usage of your soundcard devices (though with the latter you can set it up in a way that allows you more complicated stuff). other apps appearantly use consumer grade frameworks like pulseaudio and the like to allow multiple apps play to a single device. however, it's most likely neither OSS nor ALSA they are using. fgmasdr IOhannes
