I've been using it pretty successfully with this OSC Wrapper
http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/11/11/novation-launchpad-osc-wrapper-makes-midi-more-readable/
The messages are in the OSC style but it actually uses PD's FUDI
(netsend, netreceive).
It's far more practical than dealing with it in midi, though you do need
to install the max runtime (gratis).
