If I read this right, then the Recent Changes portlet is a core part of plone, but installing SimplePortlet makes it easier to set up:

well, as a matter of fact, i think all plone instances come with a
"recent changes" portlet per default.

it's just a matter of enabling it (which i did now)


I guess I don't understand what you enabled. I don't see the recent changes box anywhere.
