Pd-extended uses a quite a bit more recent version of portaudio, but that seems 
to be making things worse here.  That update helps in other things tho.  This 
stuff is really not my specialty, so I'd appreciate help with it.

One thing i have seen is that using JackOSX makes the idle CPU usage go down to 
about 2%.  I think JackOSX also bypasses all that Apple postprocessing.
