I have had a similar problem when upgrading from Hardy to Lucid / Natty. In my case it was [susloop] that didn't work anymore with the -nogui flag.
I wrote an abstraction to do the same thing and my patch was working again. It looks like some objects need updates to work with a newer OS and -nogui.
