MinGW does link against all of the various standard Windows libraries fine,
and I think its safe to say that Microsoft uses their own compiler to build
the system libs.

that's all true, but unfortunately you missed the important points:
- Gem currently uses a C++-library (from M$) to access DirectShow
- C++-libraries built with mingw are *fundamentally* incompatible with those built with MSVC. this is due to different name mangling schemes.
