If you like Ubuntu for it's repositories but need a lighter DE, why
not try Xubuntu? I run version 12.04 on a 1 GHz core2duo laptop. Xfce
desktop itself occupies ~140 MB of memory. It is slightly less
luxurious than Gnome2. Some things require extra effort from the user,
like dual monitor setup. Other things are not available by default but
can be installed, like manual CPU scaling. Overall, Xfce 'feels' the
same as Gnome2: functional and reliable.
