I would also argue leaving it, but labeled something stronger than "unmaintained".
I struggled getting -extend running on a Raspberry Pi, tons of weird stability problems. All were resolved with the latest vanilla. I presume there are many bug fixes and performance enhancements in the years since the last -extended release. Still, I think that release is good as a nice collection of externals.
