It appeared there was a windowless "Software Installer" already running,
subverting other of versions itself and gdebi. Without it, purr-data
installs and runs as good as one might expect from a VM.

Indeed there were two nw's running. Killing those and restarting gives
the following pop-up:
Failed to load extension from:
/home/fjkraan/oldHome/PureData/purr-data-mod/pd/bin. Manifest file is
missing or unreadable.

But compiling is not a priority.
