Actually, you're probably referring to the too-thin font rendering with Monaco 
on retina screens. I agree it's not very readable.

@Miller, can you look into including DejaVu Sans Mono with the OS X release? It 
*really* fixes this. There is a "dejavu" branch which only includes the font, 
no metrics changes.
