apt-get install --no-install-recommends --no-install-suggests puredata On Debian, the default configuration is to install recommended packages, but not suggested ones. On Ubuntu Studio, I don't know what the default is, but it seems that on your box suggested packages are installed, too (which I - personally - find annoying).
