Problem solved!

It was an excessive number of [hcs/sys_gui] objects that caused the graphical
objects not to update anymore.

I had stored a number of [sys_gui] help patches as a reference for finding
certain commands quickly.

Even though the loadbangs were disconnected and they didn't do anything they
kept the graphics from working properly.

After erasing these help files and keeping only what was originally in the
patch it went back to normal again.

I'm going to eliminate as many of them as possible now and put everything in
one central place instead of having them in a number of windows.

Minimizing the number of those [sys_gui] objects should keep everything working
. . .

Starting up with my main window hidden behind a GEM jpg logo is not an issue
anymore!

Kiosking any window with no delay will crash the window, though!

Yes, Rolf!

A minimal patch works fine.

My complex patch worked also fine for 5-10 years and stopped working now when I
tried to add a .jpg logo with gem during starting up.

Actually, now - without gem - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm searching at the moment what makes the difference whether number boxes work
or not.

(For example I delayed sample/audiofile loading which does not seem to change
anything. [soundfiler] tends to block everything during loading . . .

Maybe I'll eliminate loading audio files altogether now.)

I have eliminated all window hiding, iconifying or moving.

Sometimes it works now and sometimes it doesn't when restarting the patch
without any changes - just loading a few times.

It's total random whether the number boxes, etc. want to work or not as of now
. . .

If my main patch is invisible during starting up it definitely does not work.

I had this issue before and kept it visible for this reason.

on Windows 10

a minimal patch with a loadbang of vis 0 to the main (and only) canvas,

a numberbox updating with a metro,

a vis 1 after some time

shows the number box changing.

does something like this also not work in your setup?
