Okay, but the abstract doesn't make it safe enough to prevent PureData from crashing on erroneous datastructures.

If you try to access an invalid pointer, you should only get an error message (e.g. "stale pointer"). They are actually safe, assuming the underlaying implementation is correct. If you experience crashes with data structures, please open a bug report.
