Small file size dodgy images, good images dodgy file size... the
crux of your problem is the resolution the images are being downsampled too.
You could experiment with different resolutions, compression types
and compression levels until you find a good trade off between size and
quality, converting images to rgb through a plug in such as pitstop will
reduce bytes needed so you can use the saving to up the resolution of the
images.
Dcs files when output to composite will use the image inbedded in
the master file which will only ever be 72dpi, another draw back is that
your copydot files are being downsampled from probably a very high
resolution to a very low resolution resulting in a big loss of quality.
There are applications available that will strip out a lot of
undeeded data allowing you to make better use of your bytes, I have seen
posted a few times on this list a link to pdf enhancer available at
