You are thinking of PDFWriter, NOT PDFMaker.
PDFWriter is the evil non-Postscript based PDF creation tool that used to come with Acrobat (no more in Acrobat 6!!!).
PDFMaker is a set of macros inside of MSOffice (and other products) that directly enables high quality, intelligent, PDF creation. It is basically a "front end" for Distiller, so you get Postscript-quality PDF output.
