Title: Message
The rule is not to open any attachments from people you don't know, that you are not expecting, or in particular, that have the extensions PIF, SCR or EXE. Outlook blocks, or can be set to block, these extensions and others automatically.
 
You can easily receive viruses from friends who are unsuspecting carriers/transmitters.
 
Also, sign up for an automatic virus updating service like McAfee. It's well worth a few bucks for up-to-the-minute protection.
