We are attempting to set standards for the type of PDF that we ask our offset vendors to produce for us. These PDFs would be archived by us with the understanding that they could be repurposed at a later date as ebooks, digital prints, or used again in an offset edition.

I was going to ask these vendors for press ready quality in terms of the PDF, but now I'm hearing about PDF/x which seems to be device specific or am I wrong in this? Is there any point in getting PDF/x files when these projects may be repurposed in multiple ways? Am I correct in thinking that vendors can reconstitute a press quality PDF as a PDF/x file directed at a specific device?

If anyone can help me in understanding when PDF/x is appropriate and when it's not, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
