Thanks for the good feedback.
I did some testing by removing all of the images from the document and
it distilled just fine.
I'm going to use PhotoShop to resize the images for the web, but I also
have software that I can use to change the file format.
What image format would you recommend.

Most likely, an object in the stream is calling setcolor with an
incorrect set of component values, probably because (as others have
suggested) the color space for the object is different than what is
expected.
Does the file contain PostScript patterns or imported graphic objects
with PostScript patterns? If so, these are a possible source of the
problem.
The quickest approach to isolating these sorts of problems is to first
isolate the page on which the error occurs. The Distiller log will
report each page successfully processed. Once the page is isolated, try
processing this page alone. If processing still fails, look for objects
which are out of the ordinary, like imported graphics, PS patterns, etc.
By systematically removing suspect objects and redistilling, one can
generally isolate the problem fairly easily.
