I receive pdf files with embedded illustrator vector files.

First, the PDF doesn't really have the Illustrator file "embedded in it" - the AI information has been "converted" to PDF information...(the only exception to this rule is if you keep "edit data" in the PDF when saved directly from AI - but the info is private to AI).

I would like to convert these pdf files to pdf files where the embedded Illustrator files are rasterized into a given resolution.
This in order to reduce the total size, in many cases the Illustrator files are b/w drawings.

Rasterization of vector information will (almost) never make a smaller file...

If you are looking to reduce the size of the PDF, check out PDF Enhancer (http://www.apago.com/enhancer.html).
