Hi Eric,
Wow... you have ideas that blow me away :-). JPG ??? Well, that certainly is not an answer. If you really want to go the "imaging way" then convert into PNG instead and use 96 pix resolution. However, let me say that making a PDF secure like Fort Knox means that nobody can use the file anymore. If you're afraid of the "code cracking" tools then you have no other choice then to live with this fear or stop publishing completely:-).
Why?? Let me draw a picture here !
I guess that the file should be printed as well and not just read on-line. If that's the case, nothing prevents anybody (who wants to go this route) from copying text. You say... Nope, I disabled highlighting text. NO cut-and-paste chance for them ! Well, they print the PDF, scan it again using OCR software and have a word document ready for editing.
You say, nope... I disable printing. Not a chance for them, right ? WRONG ! One of the most used tools for Technical Writing & Manuals is "SnagIt" from TechSmith. This great tool is used & designed to take screen shots from anything. Heavily used for software documentation. A screen shot means a graphic file... graphic file means printing... printing means OCR scanning into Word again. Result... see above.
The only way to completely prevent this is not allowing to open the PDF file. However, if nobody can open it, then why creating it in the first place? See why I mean ? Every digital security is a compromise. You simply have to live with this thought.
Just some food for thoughts :-).

Hi,
I have a challenge! I guess...
I have to make a 900 pages pdf document. Not too bad so far!?
My problem is that they want me to make sure that the content of it all is unaccessible for copying or extracting the data. 100% sure.
I'm working on Acrobat 5 for Windows. I can go through the file security tab, and protect my file with a password but all is done this way is that the tools are no longer available: the text is still vertorial...
I know there are programs availables on the web to unlock protected pdf, so it's not sure enough to use this simple and official way of protecting the file from text copy.
I thought of having all the pages of the document into .jpg and then make a pdf with all these .jpg. But I think the final pdf is gonna get huge! We intend to put the file on a cd, but even with a 800 Mb media support, the pdf itself won't ever get opened on Acrobat on a regular machine!?
Any idea?
Eric
