As a very first step you might try reading the section in the Acrobat online
help (Help>Acrobat Help), entitled 'Using custom javascript in forms', page
164 in the Acrobat 5 version. That will give you a taster of what it's
about.

Then you might try the Acrobat JavaScript Guide (Help>Acrobat JavaScript
Guide), especially the first three chapters.

Then you might want to spend some money. The John Deubert book is supposed
to be pretty good.
