Because of the complexity of the drawings users would like to be able to print only portions of the drawing, preferably the current view (i.e. zoom to a section of the drawing and print).

I'm pretty sure that Acrobat does not support any mechanism to support this short of opening the drawing in a nonReader version, cropping the page and printing the cropped portion. (which won't work in our case)
Actually, with Acrobat/Reader 6 you CAN! There is a new tool on the toolbar called the Snapshot tool, which allows you to select an area of the PDF. Normally it is used for capturing a section of the PDF as an image - BUT it also works to define a limited area for printing!
So users can just select the limited area they wish to print and away they go. I have verified it works fine in Reader 6 when stand alone, but haven't tried in browser - though I can't see it not working there...
