I am having some very annoying problems with pdf files on an intranet site.

Files were created with Acrobat Professional 6 from @ 100 Microsoft Word 97
files on Windows NT 4. The pdf file has no security or any special features
on it and is supposed to be compatible with all version of Reader. It is
large and has many bookmarks and links.

When viewed from the intranet site the file appears fine on my computer.
However, all other employees who work here have either Reader 4 or 5 and
cannot see the file correctly. (Updating their Reader versions is not an
option. We have no admin rights to install or download any software on our
computers and must wait until IT decides it is a good idea.)

When users look at the file on the intranet using Explorer 5.5, bookmarks
are going to the wrong pages and there are blank pages on screen, but there
are no blank pages in the document. (When I look at the file on the
intranet it appears fine on my screen.)

What is most odd is that if one of my colleagues looks at the same file
from the network drive (not through the browser) it appears fine for them
there. All bookmarks are correct and there are no blank pages.

Do you know any reason why this would happen or how I can fix it? I tried
resaving and then reattaching the file on the site, but there was no
improvement.

I cannot use an older version of Acrobat to create the files (our network
security prevents me from installing and uninstalling software on my
system.) Users cannot update their Readers or Explorer software either.

We have also had issues with a 1 page Acrobat file with no links, created
from PowerPoint. No one in our Columbus location could see the file online.
Everyone in our Edison location could see the file. IT keeps telling me
that this is an issue with Acrobat 6 being incompatible with older Readers
but in this case I created this file using 6 and could not view it online
while users in another location with older Readers saw the file just fine.
I do not think these problems are solely Acrobat version issues.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can start looking?
