In the eyes of Distiller all images on a page are equal - whether they have been born as a TIFF file, brought up as JPEG or gone to school as EPS. If they made it into the PostScript that gets distilled they are all treated equally: same downsampling approach. Same compression approach. Same color tagging/conversion approach (if you happen to use that in Distiller's Color tab when editing PDF settings). In a way in a Postscript file an image is just a loooong sequence of bytes with a few instructions beforehand (what color space? bitmap or continuous tone? how many pixels wide and high? actual dimensions on final page?) how to arrange them for display or print output. Doesn't matter what image file format that sequence originated from.
