Lewis,

The overwhelming NUMBER ONE problem in printing and prepress is
in the area of fonts. Although many of these problems relate to
failure to include the fonts with the documents when sending the
documents to a printer or embedding problems, a high percentage
of the problems are associated with "amateur hour fontography!"

With a few dollars (well, more than just a few), you can buy
wonderful tools, but if you aren't an expert on using them, you
can end up with results that cause havoc later on in the workflow.
What looks OK on screen and acceptable on one type of printer, may
render poorly on high resolution devices. Especially when dealing
with non-text fonts (such as a font used for equations), you
may end up with non-standard character mappings that could result
in the content formatted with such fonts incompatible with anything
else in the future as we move towards use of Unicode encoding in
documents.

Obviously, none of us on this list know anything about the skills
of "one of your staff" who created the font. S/he may be an expert
in which case, proceed with caution. Otherwise, I would suggest that
you engage the services of a professional to "check out" the font
in terms of production quality as well as physical attributes including
embeddability, character mapping attributes, unique naming, and
compatibility with industry standards and workflows.
